MARE BREEDING SOUNDNESS EXAM

Mares that fail to get in foal in previous breeding seasons or have an abortion or dystocia, and older maiden mares, should have a complete reproductive exam.  The initial exam should include an ultrasound, uterine culture and biopsy and a complete examination of the external genitalia. We recommend a breeding soundness exam on potential problem mares during the fall or winter months to allow enough time for treatment prior to the breeding season.

The majority of the uterine culture samples are processed in-house and the uterine biopsy samples are submitted to a pathologist for further analysis. Based on the biopsy results, we can determine if inflammation and/or scar tissue are present in the uterus, and estimate the prognosis for that mare to become pregnant and carry a foal to term.
